Snowshoeing on Mt. Rainier

On Saturday, we went snowshoeing at Mt. Rainier for our ward activity ! It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and the snow was great for snowshoeing, and snow ball fights :) We were led on our trek by Ranger Casey, who taught us that there are 3 ways animals deal with change on Mt. Rainier - sleep through it, run from it, or deal with it. Not only did we get a guided snowshoe hike on Mt. Rainier, we were also given valuable life lessons ;)

In addition, I learned a new word, when we got to "Thrill Hill." I thought Ranger Casey was going to say we could slide or sled down the hill, but no, he said we could glissade down the hill. Apparently, (according to dictionary.com) glissade means "a skillful glide over snow or ice in descending a mountain, as on skis or a toboggan," or in this case, wooden snowshoes, or ski pants.

Gorgeous Day!

Great friends!

looks like you guys had a great day! how great that the sun was out. I've always wanted to try snowshoeing. Was it hard?

Katie - I think you would really like snowshoeing! It's not hard at all, and probably a little easier for you than me, given your slightly longer legs ;) Speaking of long legs...the ranger said we could try the wooden snowshoes (the ones you picture when you think of snowshoeing), but then he said that people with short legs usually get sore from keeping a wide stance the whole time, so I went with the modern plastic ones :)
